what is the cvv2 number on a credit card? Can someone plz explain.
Falguni, the full form of CVV2 is “Card Verification Value 2”.
Basically, CVV2 is a security feature banks use for transactions. It is a three-digit number that helps the payment system check whether your credit card is genuine or not. CVV2 has two other names, such as CVC2 (Card Validation Code 2) and CID (Card Identification Number).
Banks use this to verify two things:
- The credit card is really yours and with you.
- Your account linked to this credit card is genuine.
You can find this verification number only on the card itself. Never on:
- Magnetic stripe information
- Sales receipts
- Credit card statements
Where to spot it? As I have a Visa credit card, I can see the 3-digit verification code on the right next to the credit card number. More specifically, if you flip your card, you’ll spot it in the signature area easily.
However, if you own a Master or a Discover credit card, the position is the same.
