Platinum is generally better than white gold? What are your thoughts?
While buying engagement rings, I wasn’t sure whether platinum is better than white gold or not when we were shown those options.
This is what I observed, Platinum feels denser and more luxurious. It is naturally white, so it doesn’t need any plating to maintain its colour. On the other hand, white gold gets its bright finish from rhodium plating, which tends to wear off with time. That means it needs re-plating every few years to keep the same shine.
Here are a few things I want to break down:
- Durability: Platinum is tougher and more resistant to damage. It doesn’t lose metal from scratches and bumps. White gold can lose its shine over time, especially in daily-wear pieces.
- Maintenance: Platinum requires minimal maintenance. But white gold demands more care due to its rhodium coating.
- Price: Platinum is rarer and denser, so it costs more per gram. White gold offers a similar look at an affordable price point.
If you want jewellery that lasts for generations and don’t mind spending extra, you can choose platinum. But if you prefer something affordable and lightweight with the same bright finish, white gold is a great alternative.
So, which one is better really depends on individual preference. Some people choose platinum, while others favour white gold.
