Can you tell me if dhanteras is a bank holiday or not? It is on 18th October.

Every year, as Dhanteras approaches, I often hear people asking if banks remain shut on this day. Well, here’s what you should know.

Dhanteras is the first day of Diwali festivities. However, it is not a mandatory national bank holiday across India. Whether banks stay open or not totally depends on the pre-scheduled holiday list of the Reserve Bank of India.

This year Dhanteras is on 18th October, which is 3rd Saturday, so anyway banks will be operational.

Generally speaking, most banks are usually open on Dhanteras, but they may close on Diwali itself or Govardhan Puja, depending on the region. So, if you plan to visit a bank around this time, always double-check the official RBI holiday list or your state-specific holiday schedule.

I am quite confident that Dhanteras is not a bank holiday, however, it is better to confirm before making any plans to visit. That way, you won’t have to worry about unexpected bank closures.

Banks will only be closed in Guwahati on Dhanteras this year for Bihu celebration. In rest of the states in India, banks will remain open on Dhanteras October 18, 2025.
