Unfortunately, buying SGBs through bank portals has been discontinued. Nevertheless, if you want to purchase Sovereign Gold Bonds, you can check out the secondary market.
In other words, you can purchase SGBs from existing bondholders if they sell their holdings on the stock exchanges. The price of gold bonds will be equivalent to the simple average closing price of 999 purity gold over the last 3 working days.
So in a way, I am buying digital gold without the hassle of storing physical gold or paying extra for safekeeping. Personally, I find that super convenient.
