How Many Digits are in a Credit Card Number?

Can you tell me how many digits are there in a credit card and what do they mean?

My credit card has 16 digits. I think there are about 15-16 digits in a credit card number. These are not random numbers. Let me shed some light on this matter for you.

  • The first digit of your credit card is an identification number for the card network provider. For example, if your credit card number starts with 4, that means that card network is Visa, 5 is Mastercard, 6 is RuPay or Discover network.
  • Next 6 digits are the Issuer Identification Number that helps identify the issuing bank.
  • From digit 7 to n-1, the digits are unique to the card holder.
  • The last digit is a check digit that helps prevent errors while manually entering and frauds.

Apart from this you will see numbers in xx/yy format that indicate validity of your credit card, and 3 digits on the backside of the credit card which is CVV.

I hope this helps you understand the digits on credit card and everything they represent.
