Is Experian a Reliable Credit Score?

Please share your thoughts on this?

Yes, not only in India, but also across other countries, Experian is one of the trusted credit bureaus.

While many people are more familiar with CIBIL, Experian is also a reliable credit bureau. These are some key things I can share with you:

  • Experian operates in 30+ countries and pulls data from a wide range of sources. It includes banks, credit cards, utility payments, rental history, and even public records.
  • This gives you a comprehensive profile, so that you can easily track your progress.
  • In India, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) also recognises the Experian score.
  • It offers a credit score range from 300 to 900, just like CIBIL.

To give you a credit score, it generally uses the FICO scoring model, which looks at:

  • Payment history
  • Limit utilisation
  • Age of your credit accounts
  • Credit mix (credit cards, loans, etc.)
  • Recent loan or card inquiries

Even though the exact scoring formula may differ slightly from CIBIL’s, the main purpose is the same. Ultimately, it also shows how well you manage credit.

In case you do not have a credit score, you can start with an FD-backed card for easy approval.
